What is a skyscraper?
A skyscraper is a tall, continuously habitable building having multiple floors. Modern sources currently define skyscrapers as being at least 100 meters (330 ft.) or 150 meters (490 ft.) in height. However, there are no universally accepted definitions, other than being very tall high-rise buildings.
Steps to evacuate:
Skyscraper evacuation system has changed significantly since 9/11. Seeing a skyscraper crumble and so many lives lost got experts thinking about the evacuation procedures in extreme situations. Shortly after 9/11, the national institute of standards and Technology gave the new recommendations, a good number of them focused on an improved designs for evacuations, like extra stairwells, impacts resistant walls and glow-in-the-dark stair walls.
Any tall building should be evacuated in the sections as it prevents overcrowding in the stir walls. Some high rise buildings have multiple stairs that occupants at different levels that could use to quickly exit the buildings without any hindrance.
Most of the evacuation plans involves occupants moving quickly to level or floor that is easy to reach but below the fire. For example, if there is a fire on the 20th floor and someone is on 22nd floor, then the other one may be moved to 16th floor to wait for further instructions.
Arrangements should be made to relays potentially lifesaving information’s to every occupant in the real time. An announcement should be made with the instructions mentioned above after the fire alarm. If for some reasons an announcement isn’t possible all the resident should be absurd with the steps they should take in the vent of a fire. Way in advance. Every high rise buildings should have at least concrete evacuations plans in the building at a time of fire emergency.
Stages of Evacuation:
In the event of an emergency residents will be advised when they should prepare for an evacuation. There are four stages of an evacuation:
The emergency does not allow for any warnings to prepare to evacuate. This evacuation is immediate due to threat to life safety.
People should be prepared to evacuate the area. If not already prepared, use this undetermined period of time to begin an orderly preparation for possible evacuation orders. People may wish to self-evacuate; this is only an alert.
People have been ordered to evacuate the area. This is an order and there is no room for discretionary decision making on the part of the population at risk. An Emergency Reception & Information Centre will be set up; you will be given the location and are asked to register in.
The population that was ordered out of the area previously may now return as the danger has passed. People are requested to remain ready and alert in case the situation changes. If this occurs, RCMP will alert everyone in the impacted area.
